Awesome Day

So this doesn't really have much to do with Paris or abroad (although I did just sit through two straight hours of lecture about communism, socialism, and Soviet Russia), but I thought I'd use this space to share about my great news today anyway.

Yesterday, the selection times were posted for on-campus apartments at Tufts. This year (last semester), three friends and I shared a four-person apartment which we managed to secure last year with 4 junior lottery numbers. Since we have higher senior numbers now, we figured we should be able to get the same apartment again with no problem. Apparently, though, that wasn't the case -- we missed the cutoff by two slots and it looked like we'd be left without housing for next year. But hen we got an email from ResLife saying the lottery selection times were invalid due to a "glitch." So there was still a chance! Surely now, once they were corrected, we'd be bumped up and get the apartment we thought was pretty much a guarantee.

When I got home from the aforementioned interminable lecture, I immediately went online to check the updated times and... our lottery average now put us even lower on the list. No way we're getting another 4-person on-campus apartment. I'm not sure exactly what our options are now, but they are neither great nor plentiful. So that's Great News #1.

Great News #2: While checking my email to see if I had gotten any news about the housing stuff, I got a message from the director of Breakthrough Cambridge, a teaching program where I worked last semester, saying that I had been paid too much (I received work-study) and that we needed to "figure out how to get this squared away" soon.

Since it was a work-study position, I was getting paid by both Tufts and Breakthrough and apparently there was a mix-up/miscommunication between them and now I have to repay over $300. Since it was more than I was supposed to be paid in the first place, I can't really be upset that I have to give back the difference, but it is annoying since it has been over two months since I received my final payment and I already deposited and have been using the money. And I was also taxed on some of it and reported it on my tax return, so if I have to repay the difference in full, I'll be getting penalized for their (really, Tufts') mistake.

The rest of my day wasn't bad, but this news that met me when I got home really put a damper on everything. Now, on top of having to finish a job application (coincidentally, to Breakthrough for the summer) and work on paper due Tuesday, I also have to figure out these two problems which are only harder to deal with when I'm not in the same country as anyone else involved.

At least dinner tonight should be nice. The family has friends from Ireland visiting and eating with us, so it should be a good one.
